GREENTRACE Multiplier Event in Spain

Thursday, 23 May 2024, Multiplier event of the GREENTRACE project organised by Universidad Católica de Valencia, Spain

On Thursday 23rd May, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV) presented the GREENTRACE project to a large audience of students and teachers.

The entire Spanish team of the project, led by coordinator Florentino Huertas Olmedo, was present at this multiplier event to explain to the public what the project consists of and what its objective is: to use sport and outdoor activities to change young people’s attitudes towards sustainability and the natural environment in order to tackle the climate crisis.

In addition to the general objective, the event was also an opportunity to present the research and training activities taking place in the project partner countries. A special focus was given to the presentation of the methodology and tools developed to clarify how we intend to achieve the main objective of the project, which is to create a sustainable strategy that combines a new outdoor education with active approaches that are being tested in several European countries.

To achieve this goal, “it is necessary to improve the skills of youth workers and other educators working with this age group, developing new sustainable learning projects in multidisciplinary contexts,” says Huertas. In this sense, “the project promotes youth leadership in sustainable initiatives and gives young people the opportunity to become agents of change in their communities”.

To date, the project has produced a report outlining the teaching-learning process of sustainability concepts in four dimensions: psychology, environment, sport and youth. It has also developed an interactive manual for youth workers on effective methods of sustainability education through sport, active learning and outdoor education. All these materials are already available on the project website and were presented during the event.

In the near future, a digital platform will be created to share the experiences of experimenting with this new educational method and the resources produced by the experimenters themselves, thus promoting cooperation in active learning for sustainability between different countries.
